Strategic Planning Group

Where Do We GROW from Here?JUC is in the early years of implementing a dynamic, sustainable and repeatable strategic planning process. The Strategic Planning Group, led by Jon Hassinger, is an ad hoc committee of the Board of Trustees charged with facilitating the strategic planning process and, as requested, serving as a incubator for new strategic initiatives.
The 2011 strategic objectives include:

  • Grow the capacity of JUC to accomplish our mission and touch lives
  • JUC members and potential members recognize JUC as a place to seek “deeper meaning” through personal and community spiritual practice
  • Grow Youth / Young Adult Engagement

One objective is still in the incubator phase:
Grow the capacity of JUC to accomplish our mission and touch lives.

The first objective was a natural extension of our mission statement, which includes growing Unitarian Universalism, and transforming the world outside our church walls. An almost two-year process implemented by the Options Analysis Team has resulted in a proposal to establish a JUC campus in Evergreen, Colorado. In July 2011 the JUC Evergreen Campus Steering Committee was formed to provide local leadership to the process with the initial goal of determining the criteria for a meeting location and finding a suitable worship space. The committee submitted a proposal to the Strategic Planning Group asking for the establishment of a JUC campus in Evergreen. As our JUC bylaws require, the Strategic Planning Group will present a motion at the fall congregational meeting which would permit the Board of Trustees to enter into a lease to secure a worship venue for an Evergreen campus.

Fellowship events will continue to nurture the community to the north of JUC for a future growth. Also part of this objective, members of the Sound & Light Team, Options Analysis Team and Information Technology Committee have researched ways to improve our video technology so worship services and events can be transmitted to the chapel as a second venue and to provide recordings on DVD or online. We have seen the tangible results of the purchases made possible by Auction Special Appeal funds raised in November 2010 with the installation of a 40-inch HDTV in the south commons and a portable 60-inch HDTV in the chapel with more improvements to come.

Significant initiatives supporting two of the three objectives have transitioned back to core program groups.

JUC members and potential members recognize JUC as a place to seek “deeper meaning” through personal and community spiritual practice.

  • Our small group ministry was revitalized with the start of our current Covenant Group program.
  • The ministerial staff began an adult religious education program during the 9:15 a.m. service focused in 2010-11 on the principles and sources led by our ministerial staff and lay leaders. An average of 40 people attended each class offered over 12 weeks.
  • The color, lighting and sound within the main church building were improved to create a more appealing environment.

Grow Youth / Young Adult Engagement

The Young Adult Ministry Group was created within Program Council to respond to the call to grow youth and young adult engagement. An EMGT grant was awarded to fund a part-time staff person to focus on efforts to connect young adults to our faith (including coordination of a young adult workshop in 2012), and two young adults and one advocate were sponsored to attend General Assembly 2011. The group will provide programming to young adults (incorporating the 20s & 30s Group), participate in the Boulder Denver Cluster Abundance! worship services, explore campus ministry at Colorado School of Mines and Red Rocks Community College.
