Musical Opportunities

Spring Musical: Let My People Go!—the Story of Moses

Written by David Burrows with traditional Jewish folk music, this musical will be performed on Sunday, March 2 at 9:15 and 11 a.m. JUC youth in kindergarten through 8th grade are invited to participate as actors and singers in speaking and singing parts. Adults needed to help with costumes, sets, props, stage management, sound and lights, program production, rehearsal supervision, etc. Rehearsals will be held Sundays and Tuesdays beginning Jan. 6 through March 2. Children’s Choir

Tuesdays • 4:30 to 5 p.m. (Priestley rm.) • Directors: Keith Arnold, Minister of Music and Bob Hofmann.
The JUC Children’s Choir is open to children ages 4 through first grade. In weekly practices, the choir learns music for Sunday services, learns pitch matching and rhythm skills, and plays musical games.

Radiance Choir

Tuesdays • 5:15 to 6 p.m. (Priestley rm.) • Director: David Burrows
The second through fourth grade choir sings for Sunday services, learns Kodaly hand signs for ear-training and music reading, uses tone chimes for skill development, and has sung independently, with the Children's Choir, with the JUC Ringers, and with the JUC Choir.

Junior High Choir

Tuesdays • 5:15 to 6 p.m. (chapel) • Director: Keith Arnold, Minister of Music
For fifth through eighth graders, this choir leads hymns during services, further develops reading skills, and sings with other JUC Choirs.

JUC Choir

Wednesdays • 7:30 to 9 p.m. (sanctuary) • Director: Keith Arnold, Minister of Music The JUC Choir provides music for two to three Sundays every month, drawing on repertoire from many sources: Western Classical choral music, African-American spirituals and gospel, music of Unitarian Universalist composers, music in Hebrew, Spanish, and Swahili. To join the JUC Choir, please contact Keith Arnold or come visit a Wednesday night choir rehearsal. Newcomers and visitors are always welcome, no auditions required.

JUC Ringers

Wednesdays • 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. (Priestley rm.) • Director: Keith Arnold, Minister of Music
Playing on three octaves of Schulmerich Handbells, the JUC Ringers perform during Sunday morning worship services.

Thin Air Ensemble

Tuesdays • 1 to 2:30 p.m. (Priestley rm.) • Bob Stelzer
An eclectic ensemble of folk musicians, open to all instruments, all ages, and all levels of experience. The participants determine the style and choice of music which ranges from Happy Trails to Hava Nagila.

Universal Peace Choir

2nd, 4th and 5th Tuesdays • 7 to 8:30 pm (chapel) • Director: David Burrows
The Peace Choir sings rounds, songs, and chants from various traditions and genres. We sing in a circle to each other, endeavoring to free the heart and voice, to improvise and create music in the moment. The choir takes inspiration from
Threshold Choirs which sing for hospice and for the empowerment of group members. Peace Choir members are available to sing for the ill and those in challenging situations upon request.

Healing through Sound and Music

1st Tuesdays • 7 to 8:30 p.m. • David Burrows
This series of classes resumes February 5 and focuses on experiential listening and creating of sound. Explore toning, chant, and the use of specifically engineered recordings for such purposes as restful sleep, pain relief, and meditation. David recently attended conference on Sound Healing in Santa Fe and brings back information and experiences to share.

First Fridays Open Mic at JUC (FFOM@JUC)

1st Fridays • 7 to 10 p.m. (sanctuary) • Steve & Chris Sealy
Singers and songwriters (and all appreciators thereof...) A casual evening of free entertainment. Simple refreshments, including beer and wine, will be sold. Performing slots will be either two or three.
